About

Welcome to the portfolio of Lawrence Buttigieg, a practicing architect, artist, and freelance researcher who earned his PhD from Loughborough University in 2014. While widely recognised for his exploration of the female form, Lawrence has produced a significant body of work spanning portraits and landscapes that capture the distinct luminosity of Malta and Gozo. This website showcases a curated selection of these paintings—from intimate portraits to official commissions like that of Guido de Marco—alongside various architectural projects.

For a deeper exploration of his practice-led research, please visit http://aboutlawrence.eu/. The latter sister site focuses on his academic work and recent body-themed box-assemblages, which examine concepts of alterity, femininity, and sacrality by challenging traditional male subjectivity in Western art.

Lawrence meticulously constructs these sculptural artefacts from American walnut, combining traditional Japanese craftsmanship with contemporary art. Such architectural boxes encapsulate complex arrangements of organic relics, second-class relics, and found objects. Two of these were recently featured in the exhibition DESIRE & ITS EXCESS, where the structures framed profound narratives of identity and human longing.
